Bought a game on Steam and changed your mind? Valve allows refund requests for many purchases, and the process is handled through Steam Support rather than through the game itself.
Steam Refund Rules
For games and software bought on the Steam Store, the standard refund offer applies when the request is made within 14 days of purchase and the title has been played for less than two hours.
- Games and software are generally refundable within 14 days of purchase if you have less than two hours of playtime.
- For pre-purchased titles, the standard 14-day period begins on the release date. Playtime limits can still apply to playable pre-release access.
- DLC is generally refundable within 14 days if the underlying game has been played for less than two hours since the DLC purchase and the DLC has not been consumed, modified, or transferred.
- In-game purchases in Valve-developed games are generally refundable within 48 hours if the item has not been consumed, modified, or transferred. Third-party games can have different rules.
- A VAC ban on a game removes the right to refund that game.
How to Request a Steam Refund
- Go to Steam Support and sign in.
- Open Purchases and select the game or purchase you want refunded.
- Choose the option that indicates you want a refund.
- Select the refund destination available to you, such as the original payment method or Steam Wallet.
- Submit the request and wait for Steam to review it.
What If You Are Outside the 14-Day or Two-Hour Window?
You can still submit a refund request. Valve states that requests outside the standard rules may be reviewed, but approval is not guaranteed. The safest approach is to explain the issue clearly and let Steam Support evaluate the case.
How Long Does a Steam Refund Take?
Valve says approved refunds are issued within a week. If Steam cannot return the money to the original payment method, the amount may be credited to your Steam Wallet instead.
