Will GTA Online Continue After GTA 6?
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed in September 2026 that the company will continue supporting GTA Online. Speaking during Take-Two’s annual shareholder meeting, Zelnick described the existing online game as a robust business and said support would continue even as GTA 6 arrives.
This is not the first time Take-Two has made that position clear. During an August earnings call, Zelnick said the company continues to dedicate significant resources to GTA Online and expects to support it going forward. Earlier in the year, he also stated that while it is difficult to predict exactly how GTA Online will perform after GTA 6 launches, the game will remain on the market.
That does not guarantee GTA Online will stay active forever. Take-Two has repeatedly linked continued support to player engagement and the ongoing performance of Rockstar’s live games. For the immediate future, however, there is no indication that GTA 6 will replace or shut down the existing GTA Online service.
When Is GTA 6 Online Coming Out?
Rockstar has not officially announced a GTA 6 online or multiplayer mode. Take-Two said earlier this year that discussing the business model for an online version would be premature because the company had not announced one. GTA 6 is also currently presented as a single-player title on its PlayStation Store listing.
There is one notable recent claim. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said in September that GTA 6 multiplayer is expected to arrive in 2027, while discussing Twitch’s work with Rockstar and the expected increase in creator activity around the game. Rockstar and Take-Two have not confirmed that timeline, so 2027 should currently be treated as an unofficial claim rather than a release date.
If multiplayer does arrive later, the existing GTA Online could remain Rockstar’s primary GTA multiplayer experience for some time after GTA 6 launches. Rockstar previously released GTA 5 before opening GTA Online roughly two weeks later, but there is no confirmation that GTA 6 will follow the same strategy.
Will GTA Online Progress Carry Over to GTA 6?
Rockstar has not announced any system for transferring existing GTA Online characters, money, vehicles or properties into a future GTA 6 multiplayer experience. Because the new online component itself has not been formally revealed, there is currently no confirmed link between the two progression systems.
Players should therefore avoid assuming that years of GTA Online progress will automatically carry over. Rockstar could build an entirely new economy and progression system for the next multiplayer experience, or introduce some form of connection between the games later.
