Iron Gate Studio ended Valheim’s more than five-year Early Access period with version 1.0 on September 9, 2026. The update expands the game with a new biome, weapons, creatures, food, building pieces, achievements, and technical changes.
Deep North Comes to Valheim
The biggest addition in Valheim 1.0 is the Deep North biome. Located in the northern part of the world, it introduces new enemies, resources, mechanics, and locations to explore.
More than 10 creatures, new events, and additional crafting materials arrive with the biome. Existing worlds can reach Deep North, but new content is more likely to generate correctly in areas that have not already been explored.
Main Features in Valheim 1.0
- Deep North biome
- More than 40 new weapons
- New bombs and ammunition types
- 4 new armor sets
- 2 new capes
- 2 new accessories
- More than 10 new creatures
- More than 80 new building pieces
- More than 30 new crafting materials
- More than 20 new food items
- New crafting structures and tools
- New locations and events
- New music
- Upgradeable pockets
- Achievement system
The hammer and serving-tray menus were also redesigned. All hair and beard options are now available from character creation, and enemy spawn rates in Ashlands have been rebalanced.

Do Old Valheim Saves Work in 1.0?
You do not have to create a new world to move to Valheim 1.0. Existing characters and world saves can continue after the update, and the developer did not require a save reset.
Previously explored areas may not generate all new world content correctly. Players who want to see the complete 1.0 experience are encouraged to start a new world, while players keeping old saves should travel into unexplored areas around Deep North.
PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 Versions
Valheim 1.0 also launched on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. The game is available on PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and S as well.
Crossplay is available across supported platforms, allowing players on different devices to join the same server. Server capacity remains between 1 and 10 players.
How Do Achievements Work in Valheim 1.0?
The achievement system begins tracking after version 1.0 is installed. Actions completed before the update are not automatically applied retroactively, so a boss defeated in an older save may need to be defeated again to unlock the related achievement.
Some world settings and cheat use can also prevent selected achievements from unlocking.
Performance Changes
The Unity engine version was updated, a new view-distance option was added, and the patch includes changes aimed at reducing short stutters while loading new areas and speeding up save operations.
Performance problems around very large bases have not been fully solved. Iron Gate says optimization work for heavily built worlds will continue after 1.0.
